Lucyna Ligocka-Kohut has a Master’s degree in Ethnology and Anthropology. Her passions are managing and promoting folk culture. Contrary to the common belief that traditions are now in decrease being killed by commercialisation, Lucyna does not let herself be discouraged. She keeps doing her best to preserve the cultural heritage of our ancestors with her determination of a highland woman. She is indeed very good at it.
Lucyna works at the Istebna Culture Centre and she often contacts with lace maker circles. She had realized that lace works are often underestimated and Koniaków lace had not been recognizable broadly in the world. Not surprisingly though, if it had not been written about. After entering Koniaków lace in the Internet web browser there were only links… to lingerie websites. And maybe it would have remained like that if it not had been changed by Lucyna, an ethnologist with managing skills.
The first had been dreams of a book about Koniaków crocheting. And it came true! When carrying out a border project, Lucyna helped to publish a book Koniaków Lace written by Małgorzata Kiereś in 2010. She is also an organiser of Koniaków Lace Days Festival in Koniaków, preparing exhibitions, competitions and lace fashion shows, and being a lace fashion lover herself.
In 2001 Lucyna hit upon the idea of making the Biggest Koniaków Lace in the World and entering it to the Guiness Book of Records. There were a lot of people who found it a crazy idea. Who would make such an enormous effort not having a chance for big profits? Lucyna did not give up. She wrote a project which was rejected several times, but eventually, in 2013 she succeeded. She found five wonderful lace makers who took up the challenge. Lucyna was supporting the team all the time, carrying on with the project to completion despite great difficulties. She brought kilometres of thread for the lace makers and motivated the team in harder moments. And the effect? Giant lace rose with 5 metres diameter made up with thousands of elements. For completing the project, Lucyna was awarded the Dziennik Zachodni Man of the Year prize. She dedicated this title to the team of five lace makers.
After beating the record she wrote another project - Lace Visegrad. This time the aim was to take the Biggest Lace to the capitals of Visegrad countries. And the effect? The giant lace was admired in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Bratislava. Apart from the exhibitions there were workshops conducted by the Koniaków lace makers and speeches made by Lucyna. As part of the project this website has also been made. Therefore much has already been done, but one thing is sure – as for lace promotion Lucyna has not stopped yet.
