Maiden name Gwarek, born on 06.10.1958, she lives in Koniaków. Mrs Rybka is a granddaughter of the famous lace maker Maria Gwarek. Her grandmother lived in the years 1896-1962 and was a folk artist and a social activist. Maria Gwarek’s lace works and actions for the benefit of lace making in Koniaków had contributed to recognition Koniaków lace as the most appreciated handicraft in Poland and Koniaków to the leading centre of the Polish folk activity.
Urszula Rybka aims at preserving the traditions and keeping the memory of her outstanding grandmother alive. Together with her mother Zuzanna Gwarek *, they run a Memorial Room of Maria Gwarek where everyone can look closer at the oldest intricate patterns as well as some modern lace masterpieces.
Urszula Rybka’s most outstanding art work is the biggest Koniaków Lace Tablecloth, a doily with a diameter of 5 metres, listed in the Guinness Book of Records on 18 August 2013. She was in the team of 5 lace makers who were crocheting the lace for 5 months (from April to August 2013) creating the biggest lace doily in the world. Together with her friends, Marta Haratyk, Danuta Krasowska, Mariola Legierska and Renata Krasowska they have crocheted the biggest masterpiece in the history of Koniaków lacemaking as part of a project carried out by the Culture Centre in Istebna and financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
