The record was to crochet the biggest Koniaków lace doily in the world with 5 metres in diameter made with cotton thread floss. This unique piece of art was made by a team of five lace makers, including: Marta Haratyk (71) the team leader and designer of the lace doily, Danuta Krasowska (51), Renata Krasowska (49), Mariola Legierska (47) and Urszula Rybka (57) from Koniaków. The lace makers were crocheting the round doily with 5 metres diameter composed of about 8 thousand elements from April to August 2013. The course of work was supervised by the initiator of the record, Lucyna Ligocka-Kohut from the Istebna Culture Centre. The record breaking was possible owing to a project finansed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage that was carried out by the Istebna Culture Centre.
This technique of crocheting requires every element to be made separately. At the beginning the lace makers had to calculate and predict the size of the lace and each of the elements so that composed altogether they would integrate well and make a perfect circle composition. It was the leader of the team, Marta Haratyk who has designed the biggest lace with its composition and choice of elements. Each of the five lace makers had first crocheted particular motifs in the right number according to the previous calculations and later joined them subsequently to create a whole.
Pursuing the record, the authors took photographs of the doily at certain stages of making it. The main aim of willing to break the record was to make this folk handicraft of crocheting Koniaków lace popular. What is more, honouring this unique kind of art, following artists' works and spreading information about it. The record will help to preserve, continue and promote the culture of the Beskidy Triple Village, i.e. Koniaków, Istebna and Jaworzynka.
