The Koniaków Lace history

And where does it originate from in Koniaków? One of the latest research and analysis of different archival sources was conducted by Małgorzata Kiereś while she was collecting information for her book “The History of Koniaków Lace” published by the Culture Centre in Istebna 2011. According to this research most probably the first lace maker was Zuzanna Wałach (born 1892/93 - died 1945). She was married to the then head of the village Koniaków, his surname was Golik. Just after moving to her husband’s house, Zuzanna decorated it with self-made beautiful lace doilies. Golik appreciated his wife’s talent and advised her to invite neighbour women during long winter evenings and teach them to crochet.

In Koniaków dialect the technique of lacemaking is called heklowanie, the crochet hook is called heknadla and the lace doilies are called rozie which means roses. Where Zuzanna first learnt to crochet is not clearly known, but there are two reasonable grounds. The first assumption is that she acquired the ability in Goleszów, as she was in the service. This information was given by her sister Elżbieta Michałek in 1994. However Elżbieta’s son Antoni Michałek claims that Zuzanna learnt to crochet from her mother Jadwiga Gorzołka from Istebna. According to Antoni, Zuzanna had learnt some other techniques in Goleszów which helped her to develop her skills. It took place in the 1900s, so the Koniaków lace making has been developing for more than 100 years.

Furthermore, it is believed that at the beginning the Koniaków lace was used to make head covers for married women in the mountains. This belief is confirmed by the sources found in the ethnography and museum department of The Mathematics and Science Lower Secondary School in Cieszyn. There are some notations such as Lace from 1883, Istebna or Head Cover 1882 Koniaków.

There is also some information that the beginnings of Koniaków Lace date back to 1886 when the Koniaków Primary school principal was Karol Kiebel and his wife who came from Kończyce Wielkie near Cieszyn taught children handicraft. According to the sources it was the time when lace makers started to crochet head covers and in result did not need to go and buy them in faraway Jablonkow or Wisła.

In later years when Koniaków Lace was more popular it was sold in Wisła to tourists coming to spend there their summer holidays. It was mainly sold in Maurycy Roth’s shop in the years 1912-1914. The owner of the shop bought lace form Maria Legierska, Maria Gwarek, Jadwiga Legierska in Jan and Rudolf Halama’s Halamówka Inn and in Wanda and Roman Sochaczewski’s Sunshine Villa in the 1920s.

In 1917 a branch of Katowice Handicraft Foundation was set in Koniaków established by Cepelia. This organisation enabled lace makers to sell their works regularly for decent income. The branch in Koniaków was set up due to Maria Gwarek’s efforts. Cepelia created favourable conditions for promoting lace creativity and 50 years of the organisation activity allowed many of the lace makers to receive pensions. Unfortunately, after closure lace makers have no longer been employed and could not sell their works regularly for good prices, which they long for until now.

Times have changed and lace doilies, tablecloths and runners so popular in the past, cease to be attractive now due to appearance of cheaper factory made items. What is more, there has no longer been and organisation, apart from the Association of Folk Artists in Lublin which would ensure sale of Koniaków Lace. However, in the late 90s there was a scandal involving lace thongs crocheted by lace makers which again captured people’s attention to Koniaków and its beautiful lace.

First thongs made by Małgorzata Stanaszek caused the media stir and great conflicts between lace makers. A lot of lace makers thought that it was insulting for the art that for many years had adorned only altars, tables and house interiors of important people from all over the world.

Lace thongs scandal have contributed to a great promotion of Koniaków. However, it has been 15 years since that time and a lot of people now know Koniaków and Koniaków thongs only, not realizing that it all began with lace doilies which are the real value and pride for Koniaków lace makers. The artistic value of a lace maker depends on their talent and the fact if they are able to come up with new motifs and compositions. For these skills lace makers were additionally rewarded at the Cepelia time.

The biggest Koniaków Crochet Lace was created and entered into the Guiness Book of Records on 18 August 2013 in order to remind about that and again attract people’s attention to the very original Koniaków Lace model. Koniaków doilies are composed of different motifs, usually floral, the most of which are passed down from one generation to another, still every lace maker invents their own flowers and compositions. The phenomenon of Koniaków crochet lace is that there is no one template or ready-made framework according to which a lace work could be done. It is impossible to draw it in advance and then crochet according to the project.

An artist has to make a plan in her head before she takes a crochet and thread in her hands. She needs to think about the flowers, their size and most of all, she has to be able to calculate the number of mesh constituting the given motif in order to create even and beautifully laying down doily.

There is a great number of motifs that can be found in Koniaków crochet lace. It is very hard to calculate them as new motifs are still being invented. Unfortunately, the number of lace makers has been consistently falling. Times are very difficult now for this type of activity, especially among young people. Small girls are now less willing to learn to crochet than they used to be in the past and mothers have less time for crocheting. What is more, a lot of young people consider this kind of work as pointless that is why it is so important for us to have new projects, exhibitions and cultural events devoted to Koniaków crochet lace making. It is essential for the local people to realize that the art of lace making is of exceptional value and that it is worth preserving and showing off. We are sure that people want to look at the lace and buy it. Certainly these activities will encourage lace makers to develop our beautiful tradition.

Koniaków lace is used to make different kinds and shapes of doilies, tablecloths and clothes, such as for example coifs, collars, gloves, blouses, skirts and hats or wedding dresses. The lace is unique, with different patterns and shapes but all of the lace motifs are inspired by nature and tradition. The subtle lace accessories is used for interior decorations and lace outfits enhance women’s natural beauty. Moreover, the lace adorns tables not only in Poland but also abroad, you can come across it in every continent, in many domestic and foreign museums. Koniaków lace makers crocheted their doilies for numbers of famous people, among others for the Belgian queen in 1962, for pope John Paul XXIII in 1963, for pope Paul VI in 1966, for pope John Paul II, for the British Queen Elisabeth II, for presidents of Poland and for many fashion designers, such as Christian Dior, Elie Saab, Louis Vuitton. There is a book about Koniaków Lace published in 2010 by Istebna Culture Centre - Koniaków Lace. Koniaków Lace History. written by Małgorzata Kiereś

Koniaków lace is created by hand in the technique of crocheting thread so called floss kordonek. The unique lace is made by women in Koniaków located in the Beskidy mountains in the south of Poland. This type of lace is not made in any other region in Poland or the world.

Relacja z Dni Koronki Koniakowskiej 2014

Zwycięzcami byli: w kategorii do 18 lat, Dawid Broszczakowski z Kęt; w kategorii dorośli, Dariusz Szleda z Tychów, a najmłodszym uczestnikiem był siedmioletni Mateusz Ratusznik z Wrocławia.
